Colour studies 2009-2011
2011
exhibition 01.01 31.12.11 hallway
Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, NL
The Fine Art department has invited researcher Adrien Lucca to exhibit his latest works in the hallway of Jan van Eyck Academie. A new wall has been built close to the entrance, on which works on paper are mounted. The ‘display proposition’ consists of a chain of short-term exhibitions over the year, showing different series of works. The configuration, the colour of the wall, the lighting may vary depending on the requirements of the consecutive parts of the exhibition.
January - March
Part I: Optical colour studies and light transformers, 2009-2010
The first part of the proposition, on display from January to March, is entitled:
Optical colour studies and light transformers, 2009-2010.
The proposal comprises six medium format works on paper, representing two series of research: the optical colour study series (1) and the light transformer prototype series (2).
In the first series of works, Adrien developed a personal colour mixing methodology inspired by the 19th-century research of Georges Seurat. The name ‘optical mixing’ even though strictly speaking it is not a correct term is adopted as a historical reference, a tribute to Seurat (it would be more accurate to name this process ‘mental averaging’, or even ‘pseudo-additive colour synthesis’).
The second series of works may seem like grey charts, or scales of brightness.
Black paint lines are carefully quantified inside bi-dimensional forms (circles or squares); the contrast between the white colour of the paper and the black paint varies from a minimum to a maximum point. The light transformer prototypes are models for future large-format wall drawings that will interact with the lighting like custom in-situ filters. These slightly modify the visual appearance of the walls on which the drawing will be made.
