Kommando Otl Aicher is about the visual identity of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Those Games have been an extraordinary example for the universal approach on corporate design, mainly developed by German graphic designer Otl Aicher (1922-1991). The visual applications are covering a maximum range of elements with the aim to communicate the idea of an open-minded, internationalist and cheerful event. The image of the sports event also represented the image of post-war western Germany.

However, when the Palestinian commando Black September set off a series of catastrophic events by attacking members of the Israeli sports team, a completely different kind of key visuals were produced, changing the image of the event within hours, and sustainably.

The project is about this local and temporal intersection of visual events. It takes a closer look on how an identity is created. It's about the flexibility of logos, the meaning of colours and reenactment by Hollywood actors.

Kommando Otl Aicher will be published as a book in 2012.
