Researcher Theory

Henri Lefebvre’s theory of production of space belongs to the very few critical theories of the city which are mobilised in current urban research otherwise dominated by technocratic, neo-positivist, spectacular or philanthropic approaches.
However, this revival of Lefebvre’s theory, rediscovered in the 1990s after two decades of oblivion, is somewhat astonishing, considering the widespread skepticism towards the Marxist foundations of his work after the end of state-socialism in Central and Eastern Europe. Another obstacle is the apparent exhaustion of the theory of production of space following its incorporation into planning policies in several countries, most notably in Lefebvre’s native France.
The project Productive Crisis questions this paradoxical rediscovery of Lefebvre’s theory in the midst of what appears to be its double crisis by interrogating its explanatory value and critical potential in the research on the contemporary European city.
Specifically, this project will focus on the rediscovery of Lefebvre’s work in contemporary French urban research, in its instrumentalization in urban policies since the mid 1960s. It will query the transition from the socialist politique de la ville, marked in the 1980s by the Lefebvrean concept of the “the right to the city”, to the current introduction of penal policy as the new paradigm of urban governance.
The example of France will be juxtaposed with an interrogation of the explanatory power of Lefebvre’s theory in post-socialist states. Most importantly, the project will address the current urban condition in the former Yugoslavia, where Lefebvre was engaged into philosophical debates and urbanistic projects in the 1970s. This part of the project will be developed in collaboration with Gal Kirn, in a joint research project entitled After the self-managed city? Yugoslavian urbanism and the post-socialist condition.
